About Jonathan Highfield
Up All Night Bakery has been a dream of Jonathan Highfield’s for many years now and he was able to start his small bakery in October of 2019. Jonathan has over 26 years of kitchen experience and over 23 of those years has been as a professional baker and pastry chef.
Jonathan graduated with an associate’s degree in culinary arts and a bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Management from New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. He has worked up and down the east coast from Maine to the British Virgin Islands. 15 of those years Jonathan taught baking and pastry, including being one of the four founding members of Culinary Institute of Virginia, ECPI Universities culinary program in 2006.
Up All Night Bakery’s name came from his wife making a joke because when Jonathan first started the business, he was working two other jobs with the new business still just a side hustle. She joked “you are just going to be up all night baking anyway!” and that was it!
Jonathan started the bakery using the space of another bakery when they were not there, growing slowly over period of about a year until he found a perfect space nestled in the middle of the Lakeside area of Richmond. He took a former coffee shop and transformed it into his bakery, all 418 square feet of it!
Through a lot of hard work and effort the business has grown, the bakery is now open 6 days a week with a walk-up window and a daily changing menu.
In November 2022, Jonathan was able to open a separate location just up the road from Lakeside on Bellevue Ave. He purchased a mobile wood-fired bread oven that sits behind the shop. This created a whole separate bakery specializing in wood fired sourdough breads. As with Lakeside, the menu changes daily and offers mostly breads, sandwiches, cookies and even a wood-fired pizza night.
Up All Night Bakery only uses high-quality ingredients in making all of his pastries and breads from scratch and by hand every week. The croissants are a three-day process, which are true labors of love. All the formulas and techniques have taken many years to perfect and we love providing high quality baked goods to the Richmond community.
